When we first started we were surprised and excited to see it was actually calming him without making him drowsy, and school was noticing good differences too. He even had a Sunday where he was able to make it through the whole block. I was even able to take him into Relief Society, and he just sat happily on my lap. It was a miracle!
The thing is when you start a medication, you have to slowly work up to the dose. On Sunday we added a 3rd dose and it is making him so sleepy and have weird mood swings. He seems more irritable too. I was able to call the doctor, and he said it should calm down with time. This is one of the things I hate about the medication; it takes up to a month to see if it is really working properly. And then, you have to continue to play with the dose.
Sorry to complain, and I know if this works it will be worth it in the end. I am grateful to all the friends who listen to me talk about this, it really helps!
On a happier note, it is the Bug's favorite time of year! He has literally been asking for the Christmas Tree since we took it down last year. Even during the summer when his teacher stopped by for a visit, he took her down to the storage room door and said, "tree, tree."
He loves the lights and is the official plug in the lights guy for the tree and outside. He plugs in the lights before he leaves for school, and because I unplug them after he leaves, he plugs them back in when he gets home. The bus driver describes it like he plugs it in and then admires his masterpiece.
He also is the official guardian of all decorations and tree ornaments. His little sister has decided her mission in life is to play with said decorations and ornaments, so it makes for some interesting times!
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!
One last note. I had a friend send me a link to a youtube video about a girl named Carly Fleischmann. She is a teenager with autism who is unable to talk, but has found her voice through typing on the computer! It is amazing! She has been able to give insight into the world of autism, and it gives us great hope. My husband and I both cried when we saw the video. She has been on Larry King, 60 minutes, Ellen. She is an inspiration!
Yay for the tree being back up! I'm sure he is a happy boy now!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you started meds with him. Here's to hoping it makes things better for him!
Great post Heather!
ReplyDeleteHeather, I tried to post on your newest blog, but it wouldn't let me. I'll say here that I wish I had your patient understanding! My little student who is being tested for spectrum autism (?)has so many struggles with hitting! He is genuinely devastated when he realizes he's hurt a friend. But he doesn't seem to be able to control himself. The kids anticipate his mean outbursts and alienate him, or blame him, or hurt his feelings. It's such a difficult situation. I'm very tender-hearted toward this child, so it's difficult to see the disruption he causes, while loving him. I long for some tools, or some advice. He was referred in August, and we're still waiting for results.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, a smart little boy is growing up feeling like he isn't a very good person. Argh! My firstborn for a competent tutor who KNOWS what to do and say! (sorry Erin!)I'm so glad you have some good things in place for your little man. He's a love.
